The Trenton Care and Share Food Bank was established in 1985 as a temporary response to an increased number of people requiring food assistance from churches and social agencies.
In 1985, Donna Warren and a steering committee consisting of Alice Weese, Shirley Fraser, Jean Gunter, Wendy Parker, Barbara Dolton and Dorthy James from St. George’s Anglican Church initiated the creation of the food bank as a way to alleviate poverty challenges in the community. In June of 1987 we received charity status and have been operating as a food bank ever since.
After moving several times (Trenton’s old police station building, the Dufferin Centre, the former Marmora Street High School and Guelph Street), the Trenton Care & Share Food Bank moved to its permanent location at 30 Pelham Street in 2018. The City of Quinte West renovated the building to accommodate food bank operations and continues to provide the building and utilities free of charge.
Since 1987 we have operated as a registered charity. As inflation, increased rental rates and inadequate social security rates make it difficult to make ends meet our organization is relied upon by more and more people every month.
To increase access to food in Quinte West in a way that promotes dignity, improves wellness and builds community.
A community where every resident is food secure.
The Trenton Care & Share Food Bank is committed to improving client choice and ensuring the autonomy of individuals and families accessing our services. As such, our organization has transitioned from the existing hamper model to a “market” model of service. The new Share Market is like a grocery store and emphasizes the availability of fresh products including produce, dairy, eggs, bread and meat products. Individuals and families have an opportunity to select food items that are most appropriate in their context, ensuring that preferences and dietary needs are more closely met.
